CORPORATE
OUTPLACEMENT EMPLOYMENT
AGENCIES find jobs for people - not people for
jobs. So they are easy to approach. The employer
may pay the agencies fee, but the job hunter
usually signs a contract accepting
responsibility for the fee when he/she
registers with the agency.
CONVENTIONAL
RETAINER SEARCH
and CONTINGENCY
RECRUITING
search firms work for their clients, not for their
candidates - for your potential employer, not for
you. RETAINER
RECRUITING. The service is performed for a fee
by independent and objective persons or a group of
consultants organized as a firm or similar entity.
Executive recruiters help managers of client
organizations identify and appraise executives
well-qualified to fill specific management
positions in commerce, industry, government, and
the nonprofit field. Their fees are paid by the
companies that retain them, and they require a
payment before commencing a search. This is also
called a "front-end retainer." Retainer recruiters
are paid for their services whether or not a
placement is made. Executive recruiting consultants
are usually willing to receive resumes from
executives seeking new job opportunities, but
they are not in a position to help executives find
jobs. CONTINGENCY
SEARCH. The search consultant who uses the
contingent fee approach must fill the position
before his fee is paid by the client company and
this can change the entire rationale of the
assignment. These fees are not collected unless and
until a candidate is hired by a client
company. OUTPLACEMENT.
When executives are fired or dropped by various
kinds of organizations today, they are often
referred to outplacement or career counseling
consultants. These specialized consultants help
them to analyze their skills and abilities and
counsel them on how to prepare resumes and find new
careers. These specialized consultants work for and
are always paid by the firing
organization. SOME
THOUGHTS ON RESUMES. A resume is as
essential to a job search as wings are to a bird:
it's impossible to fly without it. But whether you
call it an essential evil or whatever, it must be a
mirror image (albeit a bit polished) of its
subject. Embellishment leads to jail (or at least
disappointment): Shyness or sloppiness errs in the
other direction. A person who can't distill a
lifetime onto two pages will have a real problem in
a job search.
